How can you benefit from the SaskPower Net Metering updates?
And what exactly is Net Metering anyways? When you produce your own power with solar, the surplus energy is sent back to the power grid and you are credited at the same rate that you buy your power. Your power isn’t wasted and you save.
Net Metering isn’t new, but the Saskatchewan Net Metering program just got even better.
SK residents have even more incentives to start producing solar power.
SaskPower has updated the Net Metering program, and the customers win. Updates to the program have made it more appealing than ever to invest in your energy independence, add value to your home and save money by generating your own power.
There are 3 main updates to the Net Metering Program:
1. You now have 3 years to use power credits.
You’ll have an extra 2 years to use your credits from the extra power you generate. Under the old program, customers had to use their credits within 1 year.
2. You’ll have 10-year certainty on your net metered contract.
Contracts are now longer. Instead of 2 years, the contracts are for 10 years, with an option to renew for 10 more years.
That means you can be more confident about your future with solar power.
3. You’re eligible for a 20% rebate of installation costs, up to $20,000.
SaskPower calculates your rebate amount at $0.61 per watt, so you’ll know exactly what your rebate amount will be before getting started.
For example, if you install an 8.5 kW system, your rebate would be $5,185.
But, only the first additional 16 megawatts of projects will be accepted into the program.
The program will close once the max KWhs of projects are reached, or until Nov. 30, 2021, whichever comes first. Start making your plan now, so that you can take advantage of Net Metering incentives.
One of the most clear-cut benefits of investing in solar now is your ability to hedge utility prices and protect against unpredictable increases in electricity costs.
